Australian Boating Industry Holds Firm at $10.5 Billion

Australia’s boating industry recorded national turnover of $10.5 billion in 2025–26, holding steady on the previous record year, according to a new 2026 State of the Industry Data Report released by the Boating Industry Association Ltd (BIA).

The industry now directly employs 23,500 people, supported by a further 11,500 contractors across more than 2,000 businesses. At least 1,350 people are also undertaking formal training roles, helping build the sector’s future workforce. BIA Ltd CEO Andrew Fielding said 75% of the sector comprises small, family businesses employing local workers and supporting communities, particularly in regional areas.

The industry spans boat designers and manufacturers, dealers, brokers, insurers, charter operators, clubs, marinas, tourism providers, marine surveyors and specialist trades.

Key findings include:

  • More than 950,000 registered boats nationally

  • One in 10 Australians holds a boat licence

  • 85% of boats are under six metres

  • Personal watercraft registrations have grown by 20% over five years

  • 60% of boating trips last up to four hours

  • 25% of businesses operate in boat sales and brokerage

  • 15% operate in marine trades
