BIAV’s Women on Water Builds Connections and Opens Doors

New connections and a message to say “yes” to opportunity were at the heart of BIAV’s Women on Water breakfast aboard the Lady Cutler. MC Sue Bowes, BIAV Board member and Sandringham Yacht Club Marina Manager, led the conversation with keynote speaker Suzanne Davies, CEO of the Marina Industries Association, and panellists Kylie McDonald (Ports Victoria), Cara Cummings (WIRFAB), Sophie Munday (Suzuki Marine) and Laura Van Schajik (Safe Transport Victoria).

Speakers encouraged attendees to embrace opportunities without waiting for the perfect time, highlighting the many pathways into the industry, including for those without a marine background.

Among the many valuable insights, Sophie shared Suzuki’s motto, “Yugen Jikko”, backing up your words with action, and encouraged practical steps to embrace opportunities, support others, and drive positive change. Kylie reinforced shared responsibility between recreational boaters and commercial shipping to keep waterways safe and accessible, avoid greater restrictions and support shipping’s vital role in keeping Victoria running. Her practical safety reminder: if you cannot see a ship’s bridge, those on the bridge may not be able to see you.

Across a varied industry, the morning reinforced a shared belief: we are all in this together, connected by our love of the water and a commitment to helping our marine community thrive. Just as valuable were the conversations around the room, with positive stories of new connections, growing networks and relationships that will continue beyond the event.

Thank you to all our speakers and supporters: Better Boating Victoria, Women in Recreational Fishing and Boating (WIRFAB) and Boating Careers. Special thanks to the Lady Cutler crew for the incredible setting, warm hospitality and delicious breakfast burritos!
