REVIEW OF AUSTRALIAN BUILDERS PLATE STANDARD

MSV has been working with national and state marine regulators to review the Australian Builders Plate (ABP) Standard, which determines how calculations for the ABP are made.

 With the intention of improving the safety outcomes of the ABP Standard, an update to the Standard is proposed, which is now open for public comment. The consultation period will be open for feedback from the 1st of November 2019 until the 31st of January 2020. Key proposed changes include:

  • further guidance for boat builders regarding how ABP values are to be determined;

  • requiring floatation is fitted in accordance with specified technical standards;

  • making the “operational warning statement” a mandatory inclusion on the ABP; and

  • generally restructuring the Standard to improve safety outcomes and ease-of-use.

 Feedback will be reviewed, considered and incorporated by a joint working group of industry and government.

 When you have familiarised yourself with the proposed changes, feel free to contact Tom Unkles Senior Project Officer – Maritime Technical Services on tom.unkles@transportsafety.vic.gov.au or  0439 843 051 or Ben Scullin - BIAV, if you wish to discuss further.
