State Government approves Frankston Safe Harbour project
Monday, 6 October 2008
Acting Planning Minister Richard Wynne has endorsed Frankston Council's Preferred Development Model (PDM) for the facility and will make the necessary amendments to the Frankston Planning Scheme to enable its construction. The preferred development model will reclaim 22 hectares over the seabed adjacent to the Olivers Hill cliff face. Breakwaters will be built to provide the safe harbour, along with boat ramps, up to 300 permanent wet berths for boat owners, 30 day and overnight public moorings and a boat wash down and refuelling area. The project also has potential to accommodate short-stay accommodation and a ferry terminal platform.
The revised PDM removes restrictions on vessel and berth sizes, increases floor space for commercial facilities (i.e. boat repairs, food, marine retail), and incorporates dry boat storage.
Tenders could be invited as early as February 2009 and the facility could be in operation by 2011.
BIAV General Manager Robert Coco confirms that this is an important step in developing a network of boating facilities around Port Phillip and Western Port, and is confident that BIAV’s ongoing role in facilitating similar marine projects will yield results to assist the industry’s growth.
