How does my business become a BIA member?

Marine based businesses wanting to join the BIA can apply for membership by downloading the Membership Application Form.

Membership applications are reviewed and evaluated by the BIA Board of Directors. Businesses approved for membership will be notifed by BIA staff.

New members are then assigned to one of four divisions Boat Dealers, Manufacturing Wholesales and Distributers, Chandleries Asseccories and Equipment and Clubs Services and Associations.

When do I have to wear a PFD?

It is compulsory to wear a Personal Floatation Device, (more commonly known as PFD or lifejacket), at all times for anyone in a vessel 4.8m or less.

Lifejackets must be worn at times of heightened risk, (night, stormy conditions, poor visibility) for more information about  PFDs please visit www.marinesafety.vic.gov.au

Where can I get my boat licence?

Victorian Recreational Boating Licences can be obtained from any VIC Roads office alternatively, you can sit your licence test at the Melbourne Boat Show through the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Boat Handling Course

Where can I register my boat?

Boats can be registered through VIC Roads. Call 13 11 71 for more information or visit www.vicroads.vic.gov.au

How can I tell if my second hand boat has clear title?

There is no positive answer for this common question.
Until there is a HIN (Hull Identification Number) system and REVS system (Incomberance Register) there is no way of knowing whether your boat has clear title.

To ensure your boat buying purchase is without hassle, buy with confidence from a BIA Member.

We reccommend you ensure that your dealer states that the boat has clear title in your written contract.
