Web Cam on Lighthouse
Wednesday, 17 December 2008
We are really excited to announce that our Web Cam is operational and transmitting images in full colour. Located some 60ft above the water, our Web Cam is beaming LIVE images from the top of the Lighthouse at the famous St Kilda Marina.

How the technology works
Our Web Cam provides full colour LIVE images to your computer (or compatible phone) via a complex high-speed & secure ADSL2 wireless network, back to our Boat Sales office then onto a streaming server from our friends at Swellnet, straight to the Internet. This entire data stream is captured from our specialist Pelco camera, mounted on the top of Lighthouse (60ft high) at St Kilda Marina, where our Web Cam is permanently situated.
Our Web Cam experience is truly-engaging, giving users the unique ability to view the top-end of Port Phillip Bay as our camera automatically sweeps on a pre-programmed path.
We capture and broadcast actual bay conditions and on-water activity, LIVE to the computer user. Supported by easy access to our live Weather Bureau data feed, computer users can plan their on-water activity easily from a single and reliable data source.
Swellnet operates dozens of Web Cam (Surf Cam) installations around Australia, so streaming LIVE images and data is there area of expertise. Most Surf Life Saving Clubs around Australia proudly have a Swellnet Surf Cam installed to beam LIVE data via the Internet, to the surfing community.
Swellnet began in 1998, with Ben Matson's initial forecasts sent out to a small network by fax and email. This evolved into an online service in March 2002, and Swellnet forecasts are now contracted by many of the WCT competitions including the Quiksilver Pro (Gold Coast, Fiji, Japan and France), the Rip Curl Pro (Bells Beach) and the Billabong Pro (Teahupoo).

Check conditions, before boating
No longer will mariners have to drive to the water's edge to check-out the conditions, before deciding whether or not to go boating. Now just log on from your office or home computer, interstate or overseas to see the LIVE images.
At our Web Cam homepage (www.stkilldaboatsales.com.au/webcam) you will notice our viewing window display’s compass headings. This is so mariners can familiarize themselves with the surrounds, to ultimately better understand the wind effect on water conditions, so as to increase on-water safety for all.
This Web Cam is exclusively sponsored and generously funded by Club Marine Insurance. Club Marine is Australia's largest pleasure craft insurer.
Special thanks to Mark Bradley CEO, for his personal interest in this project and his ongoing desire to make our water’s safer for the boating community.
In the interest of safety on the water for all mariners, our project is also wholly endorsed and fully encouraged by the Boating Industry Association of Victoria.
