THE SMARTCUP AUSTRALIAN INVITATIONAL - Presented by Crazy Johns

Monday, 3 December 2007

Exploding off a two storey high deck into a vertical drop with nothing but a piece of plywood and four little wheels is not everyone’s idea of fun but to see it live is awe inspiring. Professional skateboarding is an extreme sport that has to be seen to be believed. “This is amazing stuff.. I don’t know how they do it.. They are real athletes,” said one onlooker who had never been exposed to the live sport before.

Most people see young kids riding their skateboards down the street or in the local skateboard park, however the professional side of the sport is a quantum leap from there.

But this is a Golf Magazine, am I dreaming writing about such stuff? Well no, two mates from primary school age have come up with a formula that re-defines the formula for a golf tournament. Peter Wilson, a PGA professional golfer and Luke Magennis, a Marketing Graduate got discussing the profile of golf and wanted to push it to a whole new level.

“Many Pro golfers of my age group have grown up with boarding as a regular part of life. Surfboarding, snowboarding, wakeboarding and skateboarding are part of our relaxation and as activities are really popular, so why not incorporate one of them into a tournament?” said Peter

So with the drive of thirty year olds they have set up an entirely different take on the way to present golf to the people. An event called The SmartCup Australian Invitational was conceived that consists of a PGA administered Professional Golf Tournament, a Professional Skateboarding Expression Session with some of the world’s top skaters, a Boat Show and a Hot Rod and Custom Car Exhibition – all on the golf course at the same time!

“We are keen for all age groups to come in touch with Pro golf. Youth with an interest in skateboarding will come in contact with the sheer skill and accuracy of Australia’s top Professional Golfers while parents and grandparents with an interest in golf will not only see the best on the course but will experience skateboarding like they have never seen.” said Peter.

In the middle of the holiday season on the Mornington Peninsula, this event will be one not to be missed. The SmartCup Australian Inivitational is to be held on the Flinders Golf Course on Saturday 19 January 2008.
