Jobs for Victorians in Boating

Tuesday, 20 February 2007

Boating industry employment program starting to take effect ...

In late 2006 the BIA of Victoria launched ‘Jobs for Victorians in the Boating Industry’, a major recruitment and training program to fill gaps in industry skills locally rather than importing skilled workers.

Well over one hundred and fifty job seekers have enquired about career opportunities in the boating industry and are being pre qualified by BIA’s Project Manager before being registered into the program and then referred to suitable employers.

The first milestone of five placements has been achieved with positions such as apprentice mechanic, apprentice boat builder, marine trimmer and receptionist being filled.

There are a number of entry level positions available which can lead to long term job security and employers are willing to take on people who have a great attitude and are keen to learn.

The program aims to fill a minimum of twenty positions with appropriate job seekers by August this year. Regions being targeted include the SE of Melbourne from Sandringham to Mornington including Dandenong and through to Gippsland.

In the long term, this program will support the continuation of high-quality local training and help to build and preserve the skills base of a strong, growing Australian industry.

‘Jobs for Victorians in the Boating Industry’ is funded by a State Government Workforce Participation Partnership (WPP) Grant.

BIA Project Manager, Christopher Keegan, is coordinating placement of job seekers into sustainable long-term employment.

Job seekers interested in becoming involved and who are currently unemployed simply need to complete a registration form available from BIA Victoria.

Boating Industry employers seeking staff should send their vacancies to BIA Victoria. All BIA Victorian members receive free advertising on the BIA website for positions vacant.
