Biggest wakeboarding event New Zealand

Thursday, 14 February 2008

For the first time in wakeboarding history, the best Australian and international
pro wakeboarders will take to New Zealand’s waters for stop three of the 2008
Air Nautiques Australian Pro Tour of Wakeboarding (APTW). New Zealand Pro
riders Brad Smeele and Jeff Weatherall will finally have the home town
advantage over the rest of the competition.

With the new site in the heart of Hamilton, the third stop on the 17th of
February is expected to be one of the biggest wakeboarding events New Zealand
has ever seen. A multitude of activities will be held throughout the day including
live music, bikini comps and a fully licensed bar area to keep the crowd
entertained.

Now in its sixth year, the APTW is the premier contest series for
wakeboarding in the Southern Hemisphere. It has gained worldwide respect as a
talent showcase and for promoting a good attitude towards this rapidly-growing
sport.

Gaining steady momentum every season, 2006 saw the addition of a
women’s division to the tour and the 2007 series saw two major metropolitan
locations added in Sydney and Brisbane. This season the program has been
extended even further with Hamilton, New Zealand hosting stop number three,
and the inclusion of a junior division open to all wakeboarders aged 10-16.

APTW director Dimitris Limnatitis said the addition of a junior division to
APTW would build the younger sector of the wakeboarding community and
encourage the next generation to compete with a professional attitude.

“We wanted to give all young wakeboarders the opportunity to compete
this year and make the tour more accessible to a wider group,” Mr Limnatitis
said.

“This will be great for wakeboarding and will really push the level of talent
we start to see in years to come.”

With more than 180 pro boarders from six countries competing for a total
prize purse of $50,000, APTW 2008 is turning out to be huge!

Stop 3: Hamilton, New Zealand 17th Feb 2008
Stop 4: Caribbean Gardens, Melbourne VIC 16th Mar 2008
